Whilst the science is still evolving, it has found that brown fat is metabolically active and when exposed to cold temperatures it’s like lighting a gas stove - energy expenditure is increased & white fat is burned 🔥
So other than taking ice baths…how can we increase our Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT)?
Exercise 🏃♀️- Lifestyle components are always addressed during holistic nutritionist consultations and that’s because the scientific evidence highlights the significance of factors such as movement, stress, and sleep on our health.
Certain compounds in FOOD have shown to activate BAT including:
🥦 Sulforaphane containing vegetables (otherwise known as cruciferous vege) such as broccoli, kale, cauliflower, Bok choy.
🍄 Beta glucans within mushrooms, oats, seaweed, barley.
🧅 Quercetin found in onions, capers, apples, blueberries, grapes, tomatoes, capsicum & more!
🫒 Oleuropein found in extra virgin olive oil ( love the Mediterranean Diet)
When formulating meal plans for weight loss, my strategies encompass way more than counting kilojoules 💪
